    Usually 95% of the scripts that I have tried before have complete instructions and a special ReadMe file with everything you need to know about installing that script. To chmod a file means to set a certain permission. Few of the most common chmod commands are 775 and 777. To chmod a certain file or a category using FTP client find something like "Change File Attributes" and enter the chmod command script instructions tell you. If you are using Telnet, here are a few commands that you should use in order to chmod a file or a directory:

    u = the file's user (or owner)
    r = read access
    g = the file's group
    x = execute access
    o = others
    w = write access
    a = the user, the group, and others.

  33. What are the most common errors and how do I deal with them?
    One of the most common errors is "500 Internal Error". The chances are that you will experience it many times. The worst thing about it, is that it doesn't actually tells you what's wrong with the script. It only tells you that something isn't right. There are several possibilities that make up 99% of this error. Here they are:

    * Incorrect path to PERL. See the next question for more information
    * Syntax error. Check and see if you didn't accidentally deleted a command or a word that the instructions didn't tell you to.
    * Incorrect CHMOD command. Make sure that you chmod the file exactly as the instructions say. Most of the times it will be either 755 or 777 (not always!). You can also get an "Access Denied" error, if you didn't chmod the file or a directory correctly.

    [Back to top]
  34. What is the path to PERL (interpretator)?
    The perl path is the very first line in every .cgi or .pl file. Usually it looks something like this #!/usr/bin/perl. Make sure that the path is correct, otherwise you'll get an error. If you don't have the telnet access, simply email your tech support and ask them.
    [Back to top]

  36. How Do I Set up Streaming Audio and Video?
    To stream RealAudio or RealVideo, Copy your encoded RealAudio and RealVideo files (files with the .rm and .ra and .mp3 extensions) to your Virtual Private Servers using FTP. Be sure to FTP these files in Binary mode.

    Use a text editor to create a metafile containing a RealAudio or RealVideo URL. For example, the contents of your metafile should be in the following form:

    http://YOUR-DOMAIN.NAME/path/filename.ram

    Save the metafile as a text file with the .ram extension. For example:

    filename.ram

    Then FTP this file to your Virtual Private Servers in ASCII mode (because it is a text file).

    In your HTML document, reference the metafile in a hyperlink. For example:

    You can use relative or complete paths. If you use complete paths, you must include both the hostname and the complete path.

    When a user clicks on the link, the audio/video file(s) begin to download. The RealPlayer begins playing after a few seconds; it does not need to wait for the entire file to be downloaded.

  37. Why Does My Web Page Not Load?
    If you find yourself unable to reach your Web site, please make a note of any and all error messages that you may encounter. These will be invaluable to us in determining where the problem is occurring. If you do not get an error message, then simply wait until the action times out, if possible, and tell us so when you contact us.

    Helpful Hints:
    Try to reach HostingBegin's home page. Since this server is invariably up and running, it is a good indicator as to the nature of the problem. If you are unable to reach http://www.hostingbegin.com , then the problem is most likely an internet problem or a domain name registration problem, not a server problem.

    Try clearing out the 'Cache' of temporary internet files and the 'History' folder on your Web browser, since these can result in the viewing of older, non-updated versions of your Web site. Also, try hitting the 'refresh' or 'reload' button a few times.

    Try entering the IP address for your account and see if this brings the account up. If the IP works and the domain name does not, then we could be looking at an InterNIC or Domain Name Server (DNS) problem rather than a problem with the servers.

    See if you can reach any site at all, or determine if you are unable to reach sites at random or specific areas of the country. This can aid in determining if the problem is internet or server related.

    Call a friend who uses a different ISP, and find out if the site is accessible to them. This can indicate whether or not the problem is connection- or ISP-related.

    Be aware that, in some cases, the rest of the internet may be able to reach your site just fine, whether you can reach it or not.

    Also be aware that there are COMMON internet slowdowns all the time, and often connection problems that resolve themselves in time. The nature of the Net is that it is very unstable and subject to change at any time.

    Go to the http://whois.net and do a WHOIS Query on your domain name. Make sure it is correctly pointing to the HostingBegin name servers (listed at the bottom of the record), and that the domain is not 'ON HOLD'.

    If you are getting a 'Forbidden: You do not have permission to access / on this server' message, your account may be misconfigured or disabled. The only step you can take in this case is to contact our support team at support@hostingbegin.com for help with 'Forbidden' accounts.

    Give the problem some time. Sometimes and hour or two of patience will pay off.

    Be sure to note the time the problem first began.

Domain
  1. What is domain name?
    A domain name is the label used to identify your Web site, for example HostingBegin.com. It usually describes some aspect of your site and is easier for your visitors to remember than your Web address, also known as your IP address.

    In order for visitors to access your site on the Internet, you must select a unique domain name and register it with an accredited domain name registrar. Hostway can assist you with this process.

    [Back to top]
  2. Why do I need a domain name?
    If you have a website, a domain name is almost essential. Without a domain name, your visitors would have to enter your IP address, and it is much easier to remember a domain name than a long string of numbers

    [Back to top]
  3. What is DNS (Domain Name System)?
    A system that allows web site addresses to be in words instead of numbers. A web site address (also called an IP address) is actually a series of numbers and dots, like this: 132.54.8.79. Instead of remembering those numbers, you might type in words like this: www.example.com. The DNS system would match those words to the correct IP address and bring you to the web site.

    HostingBegin.com DNS (Domain Name Server - example nameserver) names: Primary: ns1.domain.com Secondary: ns2.domain.com Tertiary: ns3.domain.com

    Please check with our customer support team for the nameserver.

    [Back to top]
  4. What if the domain name I want is already taken?
    Because every domain name must be different, sometimes another individual already registers the domain name you want. If this is the case, you would have to use alternative domain name by adding prefixes and suffixes to the domain name you originally entered.

    Domain Name Format - A domain name is a random composition of case insensitive English letters, numbers and the hyphen. The string cannot exceed 67 characters in length. The hyphen ('-') cannot appear at the beginning or the end of the character string. For example, 'eat-at-joes.com' is a valid domain name, '-eatatjoes.com' is not valid

    [Back to top]
  5. What characters can I use in my domain name?
    Domain name can only use letters, numbers, and hyphen (‘-‘)
    Space and other symbols are not allowed.
    Domain names are not case sensitive.
    Domain with .com, .net, .org cannot exceed 67 characters.
    Domain name with .biz cannot be less then 2 characters.

    [Back to top]
  6. How do I renew my domain name?

    You can email us at support@hostingbegin.com and we will process you application on changing your domain name info.

    [Back to top]
  8. What is a registrant of a domain name?
    The Registrant is the entity, which is the legal registrant of the name, and is tracked by the registrar for your security and so that no other organization or entity can request changes to the name. It is standard practice to use your full company or organization name as the Registrant of Record. If there is no company name, the name of the individual registrant can be used. Ensure that you have filled in the correct information in your registration form especially on the domain name you wish to register. After the form is submitted and the domain name is registered, no changes can be made and the payment made for domain registrations are nonrefundable.

    Note: that you are not leasing the name and we take no ownership interest in your names. We do not require any advertising on your site or anything of the sort. You will be the owner of the domain name we register for you. Your ownership information will show up whenever someone searches that domain name at our site, at the VeriSign/NSI site and everywhere else that provides domain search services. Registration contracts at some of our competitors including VeriSign/NSI imply you are not the owner of the name you are registering and that it could be revoked for a variety of reasons. Be forewarned.

    Any changes on the registrant record will cost an amount of $30.00 for having the registrant information changes. This does not include the extension of your domain name as ICANN Organization is implying the charges.

    [Back to top]
  9. How do I transfer a domain name from another registrar?
    To transfer your domain name to HostingBegin.com, please email us at support@hostingbegin.com

    [Back to top]
  10. How do I choose a domain name?
    Although you cannot really make a mistake while choosing a domain name, there are some things to keep in mind. Is it easy to remember? Does it accurately reflect your website? Is it hard to spell?

    [Back to top]
  11. What do I do after I register a domain name?
    In order to use your domain name, you will eventually need a website. Otherwise, it would be like having a sign with no building to put it on. To make a website, you need a place to put your website files.

    [Back to top]
  12. How long does it take for the new domain name information to show up on the global Whois record?
    The root zone files that tell the world “Who” owns a domain are only updated about once a day - so your new domain information should be visible to the world in less than 48 hours from the time you registered it. Until then, it looks as if that domain name has not been registered but no one else can register it as it has already been reserved for you.

    [Back to top]
  13. I noticed that I am not listed as administrator, tech contact, or billing contact. Does this mean I don't own the domain name?
    The administrative, tech and billing contacts are not important in the domain name information. It is the Registrant (You, our customer) that owns the domain name. If necessary, we can change the admin, tech or billing contact to be updated under your name, however we would recommend that it be left under our domain administrators name so that we may maintain the domain name for you from time to time. If you want to be listed as the administrator, tech contact, or billing contact, email us at support@hostingbegin.com and we will change it for you without any additional charges.

    Can I transfer the name to another domain name registrar (web host) if I am not satisfied with your Hosting service?

    Yes, as long as your initial registration is over the gross period of 60 days old (as required by Internic), you may transfer your domain to another registrar (or another web hosting provider). If you registered a free or reduced priced domain name with HostingBegin.com and then decide to cancel this account and request for a refund, the remaining amount will be refunded minus the amount for the setup fees (in which the amount are non-refundable).
